Export.gov for your Small Businesses

The U.S. government has created a website to help your business begin exporting. Highlights of the site include Topics in Exporting, Training and the ability to connect with counselors, market matchmakers, and banks. Don’t forget that the Small Business Administration @ Stony Brook makes appointments on Wednesday afternoons to meet 1-1 with prospective and current small business owners. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • picking up and removing hazardous articles which may be on floors, furniture, and equipment, and places them in designated receptacles or in appropriate places;
  • moving furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning and care functions;
  • using mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning implements to wash floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, windows from the inside of the building; using manual and/or mechanical equipment, strips, vacuums and waxes floors and shampoos carpets;

Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (September 04, 2012) -

The Bricklayers & Allied Craft workers, Local Union #1, will conduct a recruitment from September 28, 2012 through June 28, 2013 for three stonemason apprentices; 10 pointer, caulker & cleaner apprentices; 10 bricklayer & mason apprentices; and three plasterer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will only be given on the last Friday of each month during the recruitment period, except in December when they will be given on the third Friday.  Applications will be filled out at: International Masonry Institute Local Union #1 Training Facility, 12-07 44th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. during recruitment period, on the following dates: 9/28/2012, 10/26/2012, 11/30/2012, 12/21/2012, 01/25/2013, 02/22/2013, 03/29/2013, 04/26/2013, 05/31/2013 and 06/28/2013. There will be no mailed applications. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Processing will be held until 10:00 a.m.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old – proof required at the time of selection (birth certificate, state-issued driver’s license, any state or federal ID showing date of birth).
  • Must have at least 10th grade education.
  • Must possess sufficient reading and math comprehension skills to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training and related technical instruction, as determined by an exam given with applications.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others, as determined in interview and pre-employment program.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by signed “Affidavit for Physical Performance” form. Required work includes:
    • Performing all phases of work in the construction industry. This includes working with hand tools & power tools, and being exposed to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing, climbing, walking and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.
    • Working under extreme temperatures, ranging from 0 degrees (outside work in the winter) to extreme heat in summer. Additionally, everyday work may be at such temperatures and in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
    • Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment up to 100 pounds, and working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts that may exceed 100 feet.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
