Because of the popularity of prior posts regarding Civil Service Positions, The Brentwood CDC has created a handy primer on applying to Suffolk County Civil Service Positions.
Step 1: The Current Openings for Civil Service Positions are found on the Suffolk County Government web site, which is http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov.
Step 2: Hover your mouse over the Government Tab, which will open up a new frame. There’s no need to click on the tab, it should open automatically.
If you see this frame, click on “Civil Service” (It’s been highlighted for your convenience.)
Step 3: Now that you’ve clicked on the Civil Service Link, you should be on the Civil Service Page. You would also be able to reach this link by typing in http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/civilservice.aspx.
Step 4: Once you’ve reached this page, click on the Green Button Titled “Current List of Exams”. This will give you a listing of all the open Suffolk County Government Civil Service Positions.
Tip: It’s always good to check back regularly, as postings are added every few weeks.
Tip: Check the FAQ’s section on the Civil Service page because it contains important information on what an Open-Competitve Exam is, a Promotional Exam, how long lists are open, and how to subscribe to Automatic County Examination Announcements.

WASHINGTON — An April 30 webinar will provide tips and tools to help college seniors and young workers learn to budget for today’s needs and tomorrow’s goals. “Start Early to Take Charge of Your Financial Future” will be held from 3-4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 30. Participants will receive practical guidance and resources to assist with budgeting, managing debt from student loans and credit cards, saving and investing for short and long-term goals, making the most of employer-sponsored retirement and health benefits, and other aspects of personal finance management.
“For those just starting their careers, there are a lot of demands on their income and retirement seems far away,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits Security Phyllis C. Borzi. “However, by starting early and taking advantage of employer-sponsored benefits, young workers can take charge of their finances and begin to build retirement savings at a time in their lives when it will have the greatest impact.”
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration will co-host the webinar with the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid office and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards as part of the Financial Literacy and Education Commission’s Starting Early Campaign.
Members of the public can register at http://s.dol.gov/ZJ.

I’ve made some slight changes to the CDC site to highlight some important databases and sites you may want to visit.
The “Computer Resources” Page has now been replaced with a “Learn the Computer” Link on the right hand on this page. They include videos on how to learn to use your computer, as well as important information on how to avoid malicious software and recognize scams.
The “Log In to your E-Mail” Section has now been moved up to the top of the page, letting users quickly log-in to their e-mail from the website without having to scroll down. The Brentwood Job/Study Databases are also now towards the top of the page.

The Rising Price of Higher Education
By William Trombley
State spending for public colleges and universities dropped sharply last year, as the state-by-state numbers contained in this special report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education demonstrate. At the same time, tuition and required fee charges rose significantly in many states, and some states reduced their student financial aid programs.
The result was the worst fiscal news for public higher education institutions and their students in at least a decade, as the economic recession struck almost every state. So far this year, the picture looks even bleaker, with states continuing to cut higher education appropriations and campuses responding by raising tuition even higher, imposing new fees and reducing student financial assistance.
